About G.K.M. Colony
G.K.M. Colony (General Kumaramangalam Colony) is a sub-neighbourhood of Perambur named after former Army chief P. P. Kumaramangalam, first set up as housing for ex-military personnel and stretching from Perambur Loco Works station towards Villivakkam station. Its other name, Butt Medu, comes from a mud hill the army used for shooting practice, which was levelled for housing after the military camps left in the early 1970s. Building work today is mostly rebuilding and adding floors to houses on the colony plots, with some small apartment buildings.
