Fe 500 vs Fe 500D TMT Bars: What the D Means and Which to Buy

Fe 500 and Fe 500D have the same minimum yield strength, 500 N/mm². The D stands for ductility: IS 1786 asks the D bar for at least 16% elongation instead of 12%, a bigger margin between tensile and yield strength, and less carbon, sulphur and phosphorus. Buy the grade named on your structural drawing.

Verdict: buy exactly the grade on the drawing. When you have a choice, Fe 500D gives the extra ductility that lets a beam or column bend visibly before it fails. Fe 550D is a higher-strength grade that only makes sense when the design uses it.

Next question: How heavy is each bar? An 8 mm bar is 0.395 kg per metre; a 12 mm bar 0.889 kg. Read

What the extra ductility does

Elongation is how far a test piece stretches before it breaks. A bar that stretches 16% instead of 12% absorbs more energy and bends further before it snaps, which is what you want when a structure is overloaded or shaken.

Lower carbon, sulphur and phosphorus make the D bar easier to bend without cracking and easier to weld. The larger tensile-to-yield margin means the bar keeps gaining strength after it starts to yield instead of giving way at once.

Next question: Is Fe 550D better than Fe 500D? Stronger, not automatically better; it matters only if the engineer designed for it. Read

Five checks when TMT bars arrive

  1. Marking: look for the grade (for example 500D) rolled onto the bar, and the BIS (ISI) mark and licence number on the bundle tag.
  2. Test certificate: ask for the mill test certificate and match its heat or cast number to the tag.
  3. Weight: weigh a full 12 m rod and compare it with the nominal weight (8 mm: 4.74 kg, 12 mm: 10.67 kg). A bar much lighter than nominal is thinner than it should be.
  4. Surface: light brown surface rust is normal; flaking, pitted rust is not.
  5. Bend: bend a short offcut sharply; the outside of the bend should show no cracks. This is a site check, not the IS 1786 bend test.

Next question: How much steel does my house need? About 3.5–4.5 kg per sq ft of built-up area (typical estimate). Read

Stock items: Factory-direct wholesale prices — usually lower than retail dealers; final price negotiable on quantity.

Our TMT bars come direct from factories in Gummidipoondi SIPCOT and other plants, and are stocked at our yards in Madhavaram, Uthukottai, Vengal Koot Road, Sathyavedu, Kavaraipettai Main Road and Manellore SIPCOT. Delivery is from the nearest yard holding your sizes.

Send the grade, the diameters and the tonnes or rod counts from your bar-bending schedule. The quote shows both rods and weight.

Next question: How many rods make a tonne? About 94 rods of 12 mm, or 211 rods of 8 mm. Read

Questions buyers ask

Questions buyers ask

What does D stand for in Fe 500D bars?

Ductility. An Fe 500D bar has the same 500 N/mm² minimum yield as Fe 500 but must stretch at least 16% before breaking instead of 12%, with tighter limits on carbon, sulphur and phosphorus (IS 1786).

Which is better, TMT 500 or 550D?

Fe 550D has a higher minimum yield (550 N/mm²) and is ductile, but stronger is only better when the design uses it. Buy the grade your structural engineer specified; do not upgrade or downgrade on site.

Are HYSD and TMT the same?

HYSD means high-yield-strength deformed bars, the category IS 1786 covers. TMT, thermo-mechanical treatment, is the quench-and-temper process most of these bars are made by today. So a TMT bar is usually an HYSD bar.

What is the price of 1 kg of TMT bars?

Our 12 mm TMT price before GST and delivery: ₹56.85 per kg; 8 mm: ₹58.85 per kg. GST is 18%, delivery comes from the nearest yard, and we confirm the price on the day of order because steel moves with the market.

Which Fe grade steel is best for a house?

The grade your structural drawing names. Most house drawings specify Fe 500 or Fe 500D; Fe 500D gives extra ductility for the same strength.
