Granite Slabs: Thickness by Use, Finishes and What to Check

For a kitchen counter, 18–20 mm granite is standard, often with a doubled 40 mm front edge; floors use 15–18 mm, and stair treads 18–20 mm or more. Granite is sold by the sq ft of slab, usually measured to the usable rectangle. Check every slab for cracks, resin-filled fissures and shade before cutting.

How we supply it: Granite slabs are arranged through a partner stone dealer who quotes, supplies, cuts and bills them and pays us a referral commission. Our own blue metal is crushed granite from the Perindesam deposit, but polished slabs come from dimension-stone quarries, so the dealer measures your counter or stair and cuts to it.

Our own blue metal is crushed from granite at the Perindesam deposit. Polished slabs come from dimension-stone quarries that cut sound blocks without blasting cracks into them, which is a different trade.

Thickness by use

Finishes change grip and look: polished is glossy, honed is matt, flamed and leather finishes are textured and less slippery for steps and outdoor use.

Granite remains the practical counter for daily Indian cooking: it takes heat and acids, and darker or sealed stones hide oil and turmeric. Quartz is the alternative if you want uniform colour; avoid marble on cooking counters.

Next question: How many sq ft do I buy? More

Working out the sq ft

Typical estimate: ; dealers measure the usable rectangle of each slab, so wastage depends on slab size and your layout.

  • L-shaped counter, 10 ft and 8 ft arms, 2 ft deep: about 32 sq ft, buy about 38–40 sq ft with edge strips and 15–20% cutting waste
  • Staircase, 12 treads of 3.5 × 1 ft: 42 sq ft, plus risers if clad
  • Floors: room area plus 10% for cuts

Next question: How do I check the slabs before cutting? More

Checks at the stone yard

  1. Wet the slab or view it right after washing, in daylight; cracks and patches show clearly when wet.
  2. Look for resin-filled fissures on the face and back; filled hairlines are common, open cracks through a counter slab are not acceptable.
  3. Measure thickness at several points; it should be even.
  4. Check polish under raking light for dull patches.
  5. Put a few drops of oil and water on an offcut; if they darken it quickly, the stone needs sealing.
  6. For one counter, take consecutive slabs from the same block so the shade matches.

Next question: How should slabs be moved and stored? More

Moving and storing slabs

  • Store slabs on edge on an A-frame, never flat on uneven ground.
  • Carry them on edge; a slab carried flat can crack under its own weight.
  • Wipe cement slurry off polished faces immediately during other work.

Next question: What goes under the counter? More

Granite mistakes in kitchens and stairs

  • Cutting sink and hob openings with no support under the narrow strips that remain.
  • Overhangs beyond about 150–200 mm without brackets.
  • Setting light stones on wet grey mortar that bleeds through as dark patches.
  • Acidic toilet cleaners on polished granite near washbasins.
  • A light, porous stone in a kitchen without sealing.

Questions buyers ask

Granite Slabs: questions buyers ask

What is a good thickness for granite countertops?

18–20 mm is the usual slab thickness for kitchen counters in India, laid on a platform or cabinets, often with a 40 mm built-up front edge for looks and strength. Thinner 15–16 mm slabs need full support underneath.

Is a 12mm countertop too thin?

For natural granite on a kitchen counter, yes, unless it is bonded to a full solid backing. At 12 mm, cut-outs and overhangs crack easily, so stay with 18–20 mm.

How thick is a 2 cm granite countertop?

2 cm is 20 mm, about three-quarters of an inch. It is the common counter thickness, and a doubled front edge makes it look 40 mm thick.

What is the standard thickness of a kitchen countertop?

For granite, 18–20 mm; for engineered quartz, commonly 15–20 mm. The working height is a separate matter, usually about 850–900 mm from the finished floor.

Which granite colour is best for a kitchen?

Darker, less porous stones hide oil and turmeric better; lighter stones look brighter but should be sealed. Test an offcut with a few drops of oil and water before deciding.
