Kerb Stones: Types, Sizes and How Many per Metre

Kerb stones are precast concrete edge units that hold pavers in place, separate the road from footpaths and gardens, and guide rainwater to drains. Count them by running metre: 500 mm units need two per metre plus about 5% for cuts. Bed them on a PCC strip with 20 mm or 40 mm jalli.

How we supply it: Kerb stones are arranged through a partner precast maker who quotes, supplies and bills them and pays us a referral commission. We supply what goes under and around them: 20 mm or 40 mm jalli and M-Sand for the PCC bed and GSB for the drive, with a minimum of one load of about 18 MT.

In one line: A kerb stone is a precast concrete edging unit set along the boundary of a paved area to restrain its edge, separate it from the next surface and direct surface water.

What kerbs do on a house plot

A kerb stone is a precast concrete edging unit set along the boundary of a paved area to restrain its edge, separate it from the next surface and direct surface water.

On a house plot the edge-restraint job matters most. Without a fixed edge, interlocking pavers creep outward and the joints open.

For most house driveways, flush edging kerbs on both sides of the pavers are enough. Add a drop kerb at the gate and use raised kerbs only where traffic must be kept off a lawn or footpath.

Setting kerbs, step by step

Bed thickness and joint widths above are typical house-site values.

  1. Mark line and level with a string; set the kerb top to the finished paver level or to the upstand on the drawing.
  2. Dig a trench and cast a lean concrete bed, commonly 1:3:6 with 20 mm or 40 mm jalli, about 100–150 mm thick.
  3. Set the kerbs on a mortar bed, tapping them to line and level.
  4. Leave 5–10 mm joints and point them, keeping any weep gaps the drawing shows.
  5. Haunch the back with concrete so the kerb cannot tilt outward.
  6. Lay pavers only after the haunch has cured.

Next question: How many kerbs and how much PCC? More

Counting kerbs and bed concrete

Typical estimate: count = running length ÷ unit length, plus 5% for cuts and breakage; nominal 1:3:6 mix with dry-volume factor 1.54.

That jalli quantity is well below our one-load minimum of about 18 MT. Time it with a bigger order, such as the GSB for the drive.

  • 500 mm units: 2 per running metre; 600 mm units: 1.67 per metre
  • A 30 m driveway edged on both sides with 500 mm kerbs: 120 units, about 126 with cuts
  • Bed 300 mm wide × 100 mm deep × 60 m = 1.8 m³ of PCC: about 2.6 MT of jalli, 1.4 MT of M-Sand and 8 bags of cement

Next question: What does GSB cost delivered? More

Checks on a kerb delivery

  1. Measure several units against the order; height differences show up along a straight line.
  2. Look for honeycombing, cracks and broken corners.
  3. Ask for the lot's compressive-strength results.
  4. Check the face profile and chamfer are the same across the whole delivery.
  5. Count against the slip, including drop and corner units.

Next question: How should I stack and move them? More

Handling heavy units

  • Store on timber battens, standing or on their sides, never tipped in a heap.
  • Lift with two people or a kerb clamp: a 500 × 300 × 150 mm unit weighs about 54 kg.
  • Stack along the line where they will be laid to avoid moving them twice.

Next question: Which pavers go inside the kerbs? More

Kerb faults that show after one monsoon

  • No back haunch, so kerbs lean out once the soil behind gets wet.
  • Laying pavers before the kerb concrete has cured.
  • Kerb tops set below paver level, so water ponds against them.
  • A raised kerb across the gate instead of a drop kerb.
  • No weep gaps where the drawing sends water through the kerb line.

Questions buyers ask

Kerb Stones: questions buyers ask

What are kerb stones used for?

To hold the edge of paved areas so pavers cannot spread, to separate roads from footpaths, lawns and walls, to guide surface water to drains and to stop vehicles leaving the carriageway. On a house plot the edge-restraint job matters most.

What are the different types of kerb stones?

Barrier kerbs with a raised, near-vertical face; semi-barrier or mountable kerbs with a sloped face that cars can climb; flush or edging kerbs set level with the paving; drop kerbs at entries; and channel units that carry water along the edge.

How to calculate kerb stone quantity?

Measure the running length of every edge and divide by the unit length, which gives two per metre for 500 mm units. Count drop and corner units separately, then add about 5% for cuts and breakage.

What is the standard curb size?

There is no single size; makers cast lengths of roughly 300–600 mm, with heights and widths to suit barrier, mountable or edging use. Take the size from your layout drawing, or for a house drive match the kerb height to the paver thickness plus bedding.

Do kerb stones need concrete underneath?

Yes. Set them on a lean concrete strip with a concrete haunch behind. Kerbs laid on loose soil tilt within a season and let the pavers spread.
