What TMT bars are

TMT (thermo-mechanically treated) bars are ribbed steel reinforcement bars quenched with water right after rolling, which leaves a hard outer layer around a softer, ductile core. In Tamil the trade simply says kambi.

They are one kind of HYSD (high-yield strength deformed) bar; older HYSD bars were cold-twisted instead. In India they are made to IS 1786.

Choosing diameters and quantities

The structural drawing and its bar bending schedule (BBS) decide sizes and lengths, so order from the BBS. As a typical pattern in Chennai houses, 8 mm goes into stirrups and rings, 8–10 mm into slabs and 12–16 mm into beams, columns and footings.

Bigger frames use 20–25 mm where designed. For sites close to the sea, such as Ennore or Pulicat, ask your designer whether corrosion-resistant (CRS) bars or extra cover are needed.

Checks when TMT bars arrive

1. Match the invoice to the bundles: grade, diameter, number of bundles and weight.
2. Look for the rolled-in maker's mark and grade on the bars; unmarked bars are a reason to stop.
3. Weigh three bars of each size and compare with d² ÷ 162 x length; a clear shortfall means undersize bars.
4. Ask for the factory test certificate for the batch; it lists yield stress, tensile strength and elongation.
5. Accept a thin, even brown surface rust; flaky rust or pitting means long, wet storage.

Storing TMT bars on site

• Keep bars off the ground on timber or block supports, about 150 mm high, at several points along the length.
• Stack by diameter and tag each stack so 10 mm does not end up where 12 mm is drawn.
• Cover with a tarpaulin in the monsoon and near the coast, where sea air speeds up rusting.
• Do not bend and straighten bars again; it weakens them.

Mistakes to avoid when buying TMT bars

• Comparing per-rod prices without the rod weight: a lighter 12 mm rod is a thinner bar.
• Mixing grades in one element: keep to the grade on the drawing.
• Ordering from a thumb rule instead of the BBS, then running short in the middle of a pour.
• Forgetting the 18% GST when comparing quotes; it moves the total more than a ₹1 per kg difference.
