uPVC Windows: How They Compare with Aluminium and What to Check

uPVC windows seal better against dust, rain and noise than standard aluminium sliders and do not corrode near the sea; aluminium gives slimmer frames and handles very large openings. Choose multi-chamber uPVC profiles with galvanised steel reinforcement, and order after plastering so the openings are measured accurately.

How we supply it: uPVC windows are arranged through a partner fabricator who measures, quotes, makes, fits and bills them and pays us a referral commission. We pass on your drawing so the fabricator can plan sizes early, then the finished openings are measured after plastering.

Next question: What exactly is uPVC? More

What a uPVC window is

A uPVC window is a window whose frame and sash are made from unplasticised polyvinyl chloride profiles, usually reinforced inside with galvanised steel and fitted with gaskets and multi-point locks.

The profile is hollow, divided into chambers. More chambers and a thicker wall mean a stiffer, better-insulating frame.

Next question: How much window area does a room need? More

Sizing the openings

A common planning rule in Indian building bye-laws is window openings of at least one-tenth of a habitable room's floor area. A 12 × 12 ft room then needs at least 14.4 sq ft of window.

Order after plastering so the fabricator measures the finished opening. Windows made to drawing sizes before plaster often need packing or cutting.

Next question: How do I check the windows on delivery? More

Checks on profile and fitting

  1. Ask for the profile data sheet: wall thickness and number of chambers.
  2. Look at a cut sample: galvanised steel reinforcement should run inside the main frame and sash profiles.
  3. Check that corners are fusion-welded cleanly, with no gaps.
  4. Open and close every sash: smooth rollers, even gasket pressure, locks engaging at every point.
  5. After fixing, check the frame-to-wall gap is sealed and the drainage slots on the outer track are clear.

Next question: How should frames be protected on site? More

Handling and protecting frames

  • Fix windows after plastering and before final painting, with the protective film left on.
  • Peel the film soon after painting; film baked on by sun is hard to remove.
  • Store frames upright under cover with nothing heavy stacked on them.
  • Clean with mild soap and water only; solvents attack uPVC.

Next question: Which glass goes in the sash? More

Window mistakes

  • Fixing before wet trades finish, so plaster and cement splash the profiles.
  • Thin, unreinforced profiles for large sliders, which sag.
  • Sealant smeared over the drainage slots.
  • Forgetting the mesh track in mosquito-prone areas; it has to be planned at order time.
  • Casement sashes that open into a balcony or passage and block it.

Questions buyers ask

uPVC Windows: questions buyers ask

What are the disadvantages of UPVC windows?

Thicker frames than aluminium, limits on very large or very slim sections, fewer colour choices in some ranges, and heat movement in poor-quality profiles. Badly reinforced uPVC sliders can sag, so ask about the steel reinforcement.

Which is better, PVC or aluminium?

For sealing against dust, rain and noise, and for homes near the sea, uPVC usually wins. For slim sightlines and very large sliding panels, aluminium fits better. Hardware and installation quality matter as much as the frame material.

Is UPVC more expensive than aluminium?

Usually more than basic aluminium sliding sections, and often comparable to premium aluminium systems. We do not publish window prices; the partner fabricator quotes per sq ft after measuring the openings.

Which window material is best for a home?

For most homes in the Chennai belt, uPVC for bedrooms and living rooms that need quiet and dust sealing, and aluminium where you want very large openings or slim frames. Wooden windows suit a traditional look but need regular care.

Do uPVC windows fade or yellow in the sun?

Good profiles are UV-stabilised and hold their colour for years; unstabilised cheap profiles can yellow. Ask the fabricator for the UV stabilisation and warranty terms in writing.
