Fly Ash Bricks vs Red Bricks: Which Brick for Your Walls

In a framed RCC house the walls carry little load, so either brick works if it meets the strength class on your drawing. Fly ash bricks are pressed to an even size, which saves mortar and plaster; red clay bricks (sengal) are fired and suit exposed brickwork. Both come factory-direct from Gummidipoondi SIPCOT.

Verdict: choose fly ash bricks for plastered walls where you want straight courses and less mortar. Choose red wire-cut bricks for exposed brickwork, or when your engineer or mason specifies fired clay. Either way, buy the strength class on the drawing, not the lowest price per piece.

Next question: How many bricks does my wall need? About 455 per 100 sq ft of a 4.5-inch wall and 910 for a 9-inch wall. Read

How many bricks per wall: a typical estimate

A 9 × 4 × 3 inch brick (about 230 × 110 × 75 mm) laid with 10 mm joints covers about 240 × 85 mm of wall face. That gives these counts, before openings and breakage.

Bricks per wall area, 9 × 4 × 3 inch bricks, 10 mm joints
WallPer m² of wall facePer 100 sq ftPer 1,000 sq ft of wall
4.5-inch (half-brick) partition≈ 49≈ 455≈ 4,550
9-inch (one-brick) wall≈ 98≈ 910≈ 9,100

Typical estimate. Deduct doors and windows, then add about 5% for breakage and cutting.

  • Fly ash and red bricks of the same size give the same count; what changes is how much mortar and plaster the wall takes.
  • If your bricks are a different size, measure ten of them and send us the figure; we rework the count.
  • Brick mortar is usually 1:6 cement mortar with M-Sand or P-Sand.

Five checks when bricks are unloaded

These are quick site-practice checks. They do not replace the lab tests in IS 1077 or IS 12894, but they catch a bad load before it goes into a wall.

  1. Size: lay ten bricks end to end and measure. A wide spread across ten bricks means thicker joints and more plaster.
  2. Edges and faces: edges should be straight and corners unbroken; count the broken pieces in a stack.
  3. Sound (red bricks): strike two bricks together; well-burnt bricks give a clear ring, under-burnt ones a dull thud.
  4. Scratch: a fingernail should not leave a groove on a good brick of either kind.
  5. Soak (red bricks): soak a brick overnight and let it dry. Heavy white patches (efflorescence) mean soluble salts that can show through plaster.

Next question: What should the test report show? The strength class your drawing names, tested on bricks from the batch you are buying. Read

Questions buyers ask

Questions buyers ask

Which is cheaper, fly ash bricks or red bricks?

Per piece the gap changes from factory to factory, so compare per finished wall. Fly ash bricks are more even, which saves mortar and plaster. Our current prices per brick: fly ash ₹7.85 per brick; red clay ₹10.35 per brick.

What is the disadvantage of fly ash bricks?

Quality depends on the factory: a poor mix or short curing gives weak, crumbly edges. They are grey and normally plastered, so they are not the choice for exposed brickwork. Ask for the strength class and check the edges on delivery.

How much do 1,000 red bricks cost?

Multiply the per-piece price by 1,000 and add delivery from the nearest yard. Red clay chamber bricks at our yard, before GST and delivery: ₹10,350 per 1,000 bricks. Send your site location for a delivered figure.

Which brick is best for a house?

The one that meets the strength class on your drawing at the lowest cost per finished wall. For plastered walls in a framed house fly ash bricks are a common choice; for exposed walls, wire-cut red bricks.

How many bricks for 100 sq ft of wall?

About 455 for a 4.5-inch wall and 910 for a 9-inch wall, using 9 × 4 × 3 inch bricks with 10 mm joints. Deduct openings and add about 5% for breakage.
