M-Sand vs River Sand: Which to Use for Concrete and Plaster

Use washed M-Sand graded to IS 383 Zone II for concrete, and P-Sand for plaster: both are crushed granite, graded the same way lot after lot and sold by the weighbridge tonne. River sand still has uses, but buy it only with a valid transit permit. Ex-works M-Sand: ₹525 per MT; river sand from our yards: ₹9,020 per unit.

M-Sand or river sand: the side-by-side

The table compares washed M-Sand (எம் சாண்ட்) with river sand (ஆற்று மணல், aatru manal) on the points that decide a mix. The verdict is underneath.

What it isGranite crushed and shaped in a VSI crusher, screened to 0–4.75 mm and washedNatural sand taken from a river bed

Verdict: for slabs, beams, columns and footings, specify washed Zone II M-Sand. For plaster, use P-Sand. Choose river sand only when a specification asks for it, and only with the permit papers in hand.

Why M-Sand is the default concrete sand

Grading you can repeat

A mix design assumes one sand grading. Crushed sand is screened to the same band every day, so the mix you tested is the mix you pour. River sand changes with the stretch of river it came from.

Shape and water demand

Angular grains interlock and bond well with cement paste, but they need slightly more water or a little admixture for the same workability. Sand shaped in a vertical-shaft impactor (VSI) keeps that adjustment small; flaky, jaw-crushed fines do not.

Supply that does not stop with the season

M-Sand is made to order and loaded by weight. Our standard delivery is a 10-wheeler tipper of 16–20 MT, so the sand for a house slab arrives in one trip.

Next question: What can go wrong with M-Sand? Unwashed or flaky crushed sand raises water demand and cracks plaster. The questions below cover the disadvantages. Read

When river sand still makes sense

Some plaster and finishing specifications still name natural sand, and repair work sometimes has to match old plaster. In those cases river sand is the right buy, provided it is clean and legal.

  • Sources: our river sand comes from Surutapalli and Nellore, from government-approved sources only.
  • Papers: every load travels with a valid transit permit. No permit, no load.
  • Stock yards: Madhavaram, Uthukottai, Vengal Koot Road, Sathyavedu, Kavaraipettai Main Road and Manellore SIPCOT. We deliver from the nearest yard that has it.
  • Price (all stock items): Factory-direct wholesale prices — usually lower than retail dealers; final price negotiable on quantity.

Even when river sand is available, we recommend M-Sand for concrete and P-Sand for plaster, because their grading is controlled and certified per lot.

Next question: M-Sand or P-Sand for plaster? P-Sand. It is finer, essentially all passing 2.36 mm, and finishes smoothly. Read

Price: compare per tonne, delivered to your site

Sand is quoted per unit, per load and per tonne, which makes quotes hard to compare. Convert everything to delivered rupees per weighbridge tonne. One unit is 100 cft (2.832 m³) and holds about 4.5–5.0 MT of M-Sand.

How to specify M-Sand on a purchase order

"M-Sand, good quality" cannot be enforced. These six lines can.

  1. Type and standard: washed crushed sand to IS 383:2016, from granite.
  2. Zone: Zone II (600 µm passing 35–59%), fineness modulus 2.6–2.9 or the value in your mix design ±0.2.
  3. Fines: material finer than 75 µm not above the figure you want. IS 383 allows up to 15% for crushed sand; write your number.
  4. Washing: washed in a sand-washing unit, not screened crusher fines. Both get called M-Sand.
  5. Tests: sieve analysis and fines to IS 2386 Part 1 for each lot, with the certificate.
  6. Measurement and papers: supply by weighbridge tonne, with weighbridge slip, GST invoice (HSN 2517, 5%) and transit papers on every load.
Sample clause: "Fine aggregate shall be washed crushed sand conforming to IS 383:2016, Zone II, fineness modulus 2.6 to 2.9, material finer than 75 micron not exceeding 10 percent, tested to IS 2386 Part 1 with a gradation certificate per lot, supplied by weighbridge tonne with GST invoice, weighbridge slip and transit papers per load."

Next question: How do I check the load when it arrives? A wet-palm rub at the truck and a jar silt test on a sample. Read

Questions buyers ask

Questions buyers ask

Which is cheaper, M-Sand or river sand?

Per tonne, washed M-Sand is usually the cheaper of the two around Chennai, because it is made to order close to the market while river sand supply is regulated. Compare delivered prices per MT.

Our M-Sand delivered to Chennai, before royalty: ~₹1,150 per MT. River sand at our yards, before delivery: ₹2,100 per tonne.

Can we use M-Sand for house construction?

Yes. Washed M-Sand graded to IS 383 Zone II is a standard fine aggregate for RCC slabs, beams, columns, footings and masonry mortar. For wall and ceiling plaster use P-Sand, which is finer.

What are the disadvantages of M-Sand?

Badly made M-Sand is the problem: unwashed sand carries too much stone dust, and flaky jaw-crushed grains make harsh mixes. Even good M-Sand needs slightly more water or admixture than river sand for the same workability, and Zone II sand is too coarse for a smooth plaster finish.

How many tons is 1 unit of M-Sand?

One unit is 100 cubic feet (2.832 m³). Loose M-Sand weighs about 1.60–1.75 tonnes per m³, so a unit is about 4.5–5.0 MT; we use 4.75 MT for conversions. We sell by weighbridge tonne, so the slip shows the exact figure.

Is 1 m³ equal to 1 tonne?

No. A cubic metre of loose M-Sand weighs about 1.6–1.75 tonnes and a cubic metre of 20mm jalli about 1.45–1.6 tonnes. Convert with the material's density, or buy by weighbridge tonne.

How much is 1 load of sand?

One 10-wheeler load is 16–20 MT, about 18 MT typical. An 18 MT load of our M-Sand delivered to Ponneri, including 5% GST and before royalty: ~₹17,483.
