Verdict: for plastered walls, fly ash bricks give even faces and save plaster; red clay bricks stay the choice for exposed brickwork and where the design asks for them.
Next question: What exactly is in a fly ash brick? Fly ash, lime or cement, sand or stone dust and gypsum, pressed and cured. More
What fly ash bricks are
Fly ash bricks are made from fly ash (the fine ash from coal-fired power stations) with lime or cement, sand or stone dust and gypsum, pressed in a machine and cured instead of fired. They come out grey, sharp-edged and the same size every time.
Their standard is IS 12894. It classes bricks by compressive strength in N/mm² and limits water absorption to 20% by mass for classes up to 12.5.
Next question: Which class should I ask for? Class 7.5 or 10 is what Chennai buyers usually name; your engineer decides. More
Strength class
IS 12894 names classes by minimum average compressive strength, so a class 10 brick averages at least 10 N/mm². Buyers in Chennai usually ask for class 7.5 or class 10; ask the factory for the test report of the batch.
Next question: Is a fly ash brick right for my wall? Mostly for plastered walls; the choices are next. More
When fly ash bricks are the right buy
Plastered walls in an RCC-framed house: even faces need less plaster.
9-inch walls take one brick length across, 4.5-inch walls one brick width; the uniform size keeps the wall true.
Load-bearing walls only in the class your engineer specifies.
Exposed brickwork: choose red clay or wire-cut bricks instead.
Next question: How do I check bricks at the gate? Six quick checks follow. More
Six checks when fly ash bricks arrive
Look at edges and faces: sharp edges, flat faces and the same size on five bricks taken at random.
Strike two bricks together: a clear ring means good compaction; a dull thud means a weak brick.
Drop test (site practice): a brick dropped flat from about 1 m onto hard ground should not break.
Scratch with a fingernail: a cured brick does not powder.
Soak one brick for 24 hours and weigh it before and after; a gain above 20% fails the IS 12894 limit for classes up to 12.5.
Ask for the class and the batch test report.
Next question: How many bricks for my walls? About 900 per 100 sq ft of 9-inch wall (typical). More

Storing fly ash bricks
Unload by hand, not by tipping.
Stack on firm, level ground near the work, no higher than about 1.5 m.
Sprinkle water on the bricks just before laying; they do not need the long soak clay bricks get.
Cover the stack in heavy rain so the bricks are not saturated when laid.
Next question: What do buyers get wrong? Uncured batches and size mix-ups, mostly. More
Mistakes to avoid with fly ash bricks
Accepting a fresh, uncured batch: ask how long it was cured, and run the soak test on the first load.
Comparing per-brick prices without the size; a smaller brick needs more pieces per wall.
Mixing fly ash and clay bricks in one wall; they move differently and the plaster cracks at the joint.
Leaving the stack uncovered through a monsoon week.
Next question: Are red bricks a better fit for my wall? For exposed brickwork, usually yes. More

Map: where our fly ash bricks are held and sourced
Our yard price is ₹7.85 per brick for a 9 x 4 x 3 inch fly ash brick, before GST and delivery. Chennai quotes in mid-2026 ranged from about ₹5 to ₹10 a brick, depending on maker, strength class and whether delivery was included.
What is the price of 3000 bricks in Chennai?
3,000 fly ash bricks fill about one 6-wheeler, so at our yard price they cost ₹23,550, before GST and delivery. The same count of red clay chamber bricks costs ₹31,050.
Which is cheaper, fly ash bricks or red bricks?
At our current prices fly ash bricks are ₹7.85 per brick and red clay chamber bricks ₹10.35 per brick, both before GST and delivery. Fly ash bricks also use less plaster, because their faces are even.
What is the disadvantage of fly ash bricks?
Quality depends on the maker's mix and curing, and a weak batch looks exactly like a good one, so check the class and run the soak test. They are also rarely used for exposed, unplastered brickwork, where red bricks are the usual choice.
How long do fly ash bricks last?
Well-made, properly cured fly ash bricks in a plastered wall have no fixed expiry and last as long as other masonry. Durability depends on the strength class, absorption within the IS 12894 limit, and the wall being plastered and kept dry at the base.
