Next question: How do I know a load is good? Colour, ring, fracture, soak and salt: six checks next. More
Six checks for a load of red bricks
Colour: an even, deep red-brown; pale, yellowish bricks are under-burnt, and very dark or warped ones over-burnt.
Ring test: two bricks struck together should ring, not thud.
Break one: the inside should be even, with no lime lumps, pebbles or cracks.
Soak one for 24 hours: it should not gain more than 20% of its dry weight (IS 1077 limit for classes up to 12.5).
Let the soaked brick dry and look for white salt patches; heavy patches (efflorescence) come through plaster later.
Lay ten bricks end to end against ten more from another part of the load; hand-moulded bricks vary, but the rows should match closely.
Next question: What is a chamber brick? A clay brick fired in a chamber kiln; the definition follows. More
What red clay and chamber bricks are
Red clay bricks are moulded from clay and fired in a kiln, which gives the colour and the hardness. Tamil Nadu calls them sengal; chamber bricks are fired in a chamber kiln, while wire-cut bricks are machine-extruded and cut, with sharper edges.
IS 1077 is the standard for common burnt clay bricks. It sets strength classes from 3.5 N/mm² upward and limits water absorption and efflorescence.
Next question: Which limits matter on site? Absorption and efflorescence; see the table. More

The standard's modular size is 190 x 90 x 90 mm; the trade in Chennai mostly sells the larger non-modular brick of about 9 x 4 x 3 inch.

Chamber, wire-cut or fly ash?
Chamber bricks: plastered walls and load-bearing brickwork on a budget.
Wire-cut bricks: exposed brickwork and sharp edges, at a higher price; ask for a quote.
Fly ash bricks: even faces and less plaster on framed houses.
Solid blocks: fewer pieces and faster laying for infill and compound walls.
Next question: How do I store bricks? Stack on edge and soak before laying. More
Storing and soaking red bricks
Unload by hand and stack on edge on firm, level ground, no higher than about 1.5 m.
Soak clay bricks in water for a few hours before laying, so they do not draw water out of the mortar.
Keep them clear of soil and standing water; salts from the ground feed efflorescence.
Use broken bricks as hardcore, not in the wall.
Next question: What goes wrong most often? Over- and under-burnt bricks and short counts. More
Mistakes to avoid with red bricks
Taking pale, under-burnt bricks because the price is low; they absorb water and crumble.
Laying dry bricks; the mortar loses water and bonds poorly.
Guessing the count on the lorry by eye instead of counting a few rows and multiplying.
Using bricks with heavy salt patches in walls that stay damp.
Next question: Would fly ash bricks suit a plastered wall better? Often, yes; compare prices and faces. More

Red Clay Bricks are held at all six stock yards and come direct from the factories at Gummidipoondi SIPCOT. Your load leaves from the one nearest your site.
Red clay chamber bricks are ₹10,350 per 1,000 bricks at our yard price, before GST and delivery. Chennai quotes in mid-2026 ran from about ₹8,000 to ₹16,000 per 1,000, depending on type (chamber or wire-cut) and whether delivery was included.
What is the price of 3000 bricks in Chennai?
3,000 red clay bricks fill about one 6-wheeler, so at our yard price they cost ₹31,050, before GST and delivery. Freight depends on the distance from the yard nearest your site; the table on this page shows the delivered price by area.
What is the cost of 500 bricks?
At ₹10.35 per brick, 500 red clay bricks come to ₹5,175 before GST and delivery. A small count usually travels on a smaller vehicle or with another order, so ask for the delivered price first.
Which brick is best for a house?
For plastered walls in an RCC-framed house, fly ash bricks or concrete blocks give even faces and use less plaster. Red clay bricks are chosen for exposed brickwork and traditional load-bearing walls. Whichever you pick, check the class and run the soak test on delivery.
