Box brick price per brick, per 1,000 and per load

These are approximate rates: the Chennai market rates we researched on 5 October 2026, less 5%. Box brick prices vary with the maker, the size and the strength class, so the sales desk confirms the price with each order.

Next question: What makes a brick a "box" brick? The machine and the box mould; the definition follows. More

What box bricks (box kallu) are

Box bricks are burnt red clay bricks formed in a box mould by machine pressing, which gives uniform 9 x 4 x 3 inch bricks with sharp edges. Chennai sellers list them as box bricks or machine box bricks, apart from the hand-moulded country (soolai) and chamber bricks.

Wire-cut bricks are a related machine-made type: the clay is extruded as a column and cut with wires, then fired, giving smooth faces and tight sizes. Fly ash bricks are also machine-pressed, but they are made of fly ash and cement, not burnt clay.

Next question: Which standard applies? IS 1077, as for all burnt clay bricks. More

Box, wire-cut and hand-moulded bricks compared

IS 1077 sets the strength classes of burnt clay bricks from 3.5 N/mm² up and limits water absorption to 20% by mass for classes up to 12.5.

Next question: How many for my wall? About 900 per 100 sq ft of 9-inch wall. More

How many box bricks do you need? Typical estimates

Typical estimates: with 10 mm joints; deduct openings and add about 5% for breakage.

Next question: How do I know a load is good? Five checks next. More

Five checks for a load of box bricks

1. Size: lay ten bricks end to end against ten more from another part of the load; machine bricks should match closely.
2. Edges and faces: sharp arrises and flat faces, with no cracks or chipped corners.
3. Ring test: two bricks struck together should ring, not thud.
4. Soak one for 24 hours: it should not gain more than 20% of its dry weight (IS 1077, classes up to 12.5).
5. Let the soaked brick dry and look for white salt patches (efflorescence).

Next question: Box, wire-cut or fly ash? It depends on the wall finish. More

Box bricks, wire-cut, chamber or fly ash?

• Machine box bricks: neat plastered or exposed walls where an even size saves mortar and plaster.
• Wire-cut bricks: exposed brickwork and thin joints, at a slightly higher price.
• Chamber or country bricks: plastered walls on a budget.
• Fly ash bricks: even faces and less plaster on framed houses.

Next question: What goes wrong most often? Dry bricks and short counts. More

Mistakes to avoid with box bricks

• Laying dry bricks; soak clay bricks for a few hours so they do not draw water out of the mortar.
• Assuming every "box brick" is machine-pressed; ask for the type and check the size of a sample.
• Guessing the count on the lorry by eye instead of counting a few rows and multiplying.
• Using bricks with heavy salt patches in walls that stay damp.

Next question: Would red clay chamber bricks do? Often, at a lower price. More
