Plywood Grades: MR, BWR or BWP for Each Part of the House

Use BWP or marine (IS 710) plywood for kitchen base units, sink cabinets and bathroom vanities; MR grade (IS 303) is fine for wardrobes and furniture in dry rooms; BWR sits between. Carcasses usually use 18–19 mm, backs 6–8 mm. Check the ISI mark, licence number, thickness and core gaps before buying.

How we supply it: Plywood is arranged through a partner plywood dealer who quotes, supplies and bills it and pays us a referral commission. Your carpenter's cutting list goes to the dealer as it is, with the grade marked per room, and the sheets arrive after the plastering and flooring dust has settled.

Why plywood is built in layers

Plywood is a panel of thin wood veneers glued in layers with the grain of each layer at right angles to the next, which keeps it stable and stops it splitting along the grain.

The grade names describe the glue, not the wood. The glue decides how the sheet behaves when it gets wet.

Next question: How many sheets for a wardrobe? More

Sheets for a typical wardrobe

Typical estimate: using 8 × 4 ft sheets (32 sq ft each) and about 15–20% cutting waste; your carpenter's cutting list is the real figure.

  • Wardrobe 6 ft wide, 7 ft tall, 2 ft deep with three shelves, one partition and shutters: about 144 sq ft of 18 mm
  • That is about 6 sheets of 18 mm with waste
  • Back panel 6 × 7 ft: 2 sheets of 6–8 mm

Checks at the plywood shop

  1. Look for the ISI mark with IS 303 or IS 710, the CM/L licence number, the grade and thickness stamped on the sheet.
  2. Measure thickness at several points with a vernier; an 18 mm sheet should be close to 18 mm everywhere.
  3. Look at the edges: count the plies and check for core gaps, overlaps and voids.
  4. Check the face veneer for splits, patches and lifting.
  5. For BWP, boil a small offcut for a few hours; it should not delaminate.

Next question: How should sheets be stored? More

Storing sheets on site

  • Stack sheets flat on a level platform with bearers about every 2 ft; leaning sheets bow.
  • Keep them off damp floors and away from wet walls; even BWP should not lie in water.
  • Seal cut edges near sinks and in bathrooms with edge banding or laminate.

Next question: What about the kitchen as a whole? More

Plywood mistakes

  • MR ply under the kitchen sink.
  • Paying for 19 mm and receiving 17 mm.
  • Laminating one face only, so panels bow; use a balancing laminate.
  • Leaving cut edges unsealed in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Using film-faced shuttering ply for furniture, or furniture ply for shuttering.

Questions buyers ask

Plywood: questions buyers ask

Which ply is 100% waterproof?

No plywood is fully waterproof in the everyday sense. BWP and marine plywood (IS 710) use phenolic glue that survives boiling water, so the layers hold together when wet, but the wood still absorbs water. Seal edges and faces with laminate or polish.

Is 303 MR grade plywood good or bad?

Good for what it is meant for: furniture and wardrobes in dry rooms. MR (moisture-resistant) glue tolerates humidity but not repeated wetting, so do not use it under sinks, in bathrooms or against damp outer walls.

Is BWP better than BWR?

For wet areas, yes: BWP glue withstands boiling water, while BWR resists it to a lower standard. BWR is adequate for kitchen wall units and semi-dry areas; use BWP under sinks and in bathroom vanities.

What are the 5 grades of plywood in India?

Dealers usually list MR, BWR, BWP, marine and fire-retardant, with shuttering ply as a separate product. The useful check is the standard stamped on the sheet: IS 303 for general grades, IS 710 for marine and IS 4990 for shuttering ply.

What thickness of plywood for a wardrobe?

18–19 mm for the carcass and shutters, 6–8 mm for the back panel, and 18–25 mm for long shelves that carry books or heavy loads. Thinner carcasses sag and loosen hinge screws over time.
