Assumes crusher dust compacted to about 2.1 t/m³ (range 2.0–2.15). Before compaction the same tonnage takes up about 25% more volume.
Work it out for your plot
- Measure the plot area in sq ft (1 ground = 2,400 sq ft; 1 cent = 435.6 sq ft).
- Decide the finished depth after compaction; check levels against the road and the neighbouring plots.
- Multiply: area (m²) × depth (m) × 2.1 = tonnes. In feet: area (sq ft) × depth (ft) × 0.0595 = tonnes.
- Divide by 18 for 10-wheeler loads and add about 5% for edges and uneven ground.

Typical estimate: compacted volume × compacted density, plus 5%. Loose material settles; order by the tonne and compact in layers.
Filling and compacting in layers
- Remove grass, roots and soft mud first; organic matter rots and the fill settles.
- Spread in layers of about 150–200 mm, water lightly and compact each layer with a roller or plate compactor before the next.
- For deep fills a common approach is cheaper earth or gravel lower down, finished with the top 150 mm in crusher dust under the floor PCC.
- Where trucks will park or turn, use GSB for the top layer instead of dust; it carries wheel loads better.

Converting cubic yards and units
Crusher dust is also quoted per unit (100 cft) and now and then per cubic yard. One cubic yard is 27 cft (0.765 m³), which holds about 1.3 MT of loose crusher dust. One unit holds about 4.8 MT.
